Energy Savings & Maintenance / Replacement Costs

Each Units Are Easily Installed & Can Be Moved to Another Home or Car

Energy savings are associated with the prevention or removal of scale build-up on a heat exchange surface where even a thin film (1/32" or 0.8 mm) can increase energy consumption by nearly 10%. Typically, residential hot water production represents 30% of a household's energy consumption. For an all electric home averaging 2000 kwh a month that would be 600 kwh of electricity usage each month for hot water. At $0.11/kwh that would be $ 66 a month just for hot water. Using the table above it's apparent that a typical house would incur an additional ($66 x .40=) $ 26.40 per month cost with 1/4 inch calcite buildup on the heat exchange surfaces. That translate into yearly cost (or savings) of $ 317, not including regular maintenance and replacement costs.

Maintenance cost will be reduced because electric heater elements no longer need to be removed and manually cleaned of (or be replaced when they burn out from) calcite buildup. Residential gas hot water heaters do not provide a method for manual removal of calcite buildup on heat exchange surfaces and need to be replaced more regularly. With more calcite buildup, the resistance is greater and the amount of power necessary in increased.

Replacement is required less when magnets keep heating elements free of calcite buildup by extended service life of a water heater and appliances such as a dishwasher and laundry machine.

Products

To determine how many magnets are needed for particular application, it is best to know how hard the water is. All city water departments are required to have such information available upon request. If the water is hard, but is not terrible, one unit may only be needed on the main water line. If the water is extremely hard, then three units may be needed for your main water line. If it's in-between then two may work just fine.

  • If the Total Hardness of water is 10.5 Grains (180 ppm) or less, one unit on the cold water source may be all that is required.
  • If it ranges between 10.5 and 15 Grains (180 to 257 ppm) we recommend two or three units on the cold water supply.
  • Use three units on the cold water supply if the Total Hardness exceeds 15 Grains (257ppm).

Magnets come Fully Assembled ready to go with no rework required.

Made in the USA. Beware of imported copies of this and older designs that may contain Lead Paint and illegal recycled magnetic material.

These magnets are not "One Size Fits All" units. Larger pipes need larger magnets to maintain the field strength and also the coverage of the field.

Magnets are only constructed from US 10 Gauge Cold Rolled Carbon Steel. This heavy steel material has the highest magnetic properties and is vitally important in the design.

To protect the steel frames, a two step US Powder Coat treatment is used to provide long term corrosion resistance.

The steel frames are plated with phosphate as a primer coat and then given a powder coat treatment using polyester powder.

Magnets are High Grade Triple Plated (Nickel, Copper, Nickel) Neodymium that produce the most powerful flux density possible using permanent magnets.

The faces of these magnets are fully protected against mechanical abrasion and galvanic corrosion. Bare faced Neodymium magnets cannot be used on copper pipe in a damp environment without this added protection.

All of the fasteners use Stainless Steel for long term corrosion protection and minimal reaction to the magnetic field.

How to Compare

Only 3 Things determine how well magnetic water treatment devices work:

  • Flux Density Inside The Pipe.
  • Magnetic Field Configuration and Polarity.
  • Contact Time with the Magnetic Field.

Flux Density and Contact Time have equal influence on the fluid stream. Doubling either one will double the total influence upon the fluid stream, up to the point of saturation.

Flux Density is measured with a DC Gauss meter (Magnetometer). Flux Density inside the pipe is ALWAYS less than the Gauss Rating of the magnetic material employed, regardless how many magnets are used.

There is a direct relationship between the Flux Density inside the pipe and the Pull Force per square inch of the magnets that are used. The Pull Force number takes into account the size and shape of the magnet along with the flux rating of the material from which it is made.

Pull Force = 0.576 x Br² x (Th) x √ A where
  • Br = Flux Rating in KiloGauss
  • Th = Thickness of Magnetized Surfaces in inches
  • A = Surface Area (L x W) in inches

A Grade 8 Ceramic Magnet (3,900 Gauss material) that is 4 Inch Long, 1 Inch Wide, and 1 Inch Thick will have a Pull Force as follows:
Pull Force = 0.576 x Br² x (Th) x √ A
  • = 0.576 x (3.9)² x (1) x √ 4
  • = 0.576 x 15.21 x 1 x 2

Pull Force = 17.52 Pounds

That translates into 4.38 Pounds of Pull Force per Square Inch (17.52 lb. ÷ 4")
A N40 Grade Neodymium Magnet that is 2" Long, 1 Inch Wide and .5 Inches Thick will have a Pull Force as follows:
Pull Force = 0.576 x Br² x (Th) x √ A
  • = 0.576 x (12.7)² x (.5) x √ 2
  • = 0.576 x 161.29 x .5 x 1.414

Pull Force = 65.68 Pounds

That translates into 32.84 Pounds of Pull Force per Square Inch (65.68 lb. ÷ 2").

Pull force of the magnet is only part of what determines flux density "inside the pipe". Equally important in achieving a high flux density is the Magnetic Field Configuration and the mounting frame construction.

Ceramic Magnet ConfigCeramic Magnet Config 2

Two common Magnetic Field Configurations of various competetors models are shown above. The figure on the top left shows two magnets are mounted to a steel back plate with magnetic poles as shown. This configuration produces magnetic flux lines that are oriented in the same direction as the water flow. The figure in the middle shows two magnets are mounted on a sheet metal frame that fits over the pipe. A non-magnetic blank plate is used on the bottom side of the pipe for attachment. The magnetic flux lines cut across the direction of the water flow.

The result of both these designs is an uneven flux density across the section of the pipe, concentrated where the magnets are closest to one another.

Magnet Configuration

The Spa Palace magnet design is a patented configuration where two magnets are placed in an attracting configuration, mounted on opposite sides of the pipe. They are built with a Hot Rolled Carbon Steel frame. This configuration produces magnetic flux lines that cut across the direction of the water flow and produce an even flux density across the entire section of the pipe. It provides a very low reluctance return path for the magnetic flux through the heavy steel frame.

The large Neodymium Rare-Earth Magnets combined with the heavy steel frame produces a flux density inside the pipe that is 6 times as powerful as GMX models.

Contact Time is the length of time the fluid stream is exposed to the magnetic field. The contact time is determined by the velocity of the fluid stream and the length of the magnetic field. The velocity of the water is determined by flow rate, water pressure, friction losses, and pipe diameter. Just like the flux density, contact time is very important.

Remember:

  • NO STEEL Frame = CHEAP WIMPY PRODUCT
  • SHEET METAL Frame = BETTER PRODUCT
  • HEAVY STEEL Frame = BEST PERFORMING PRODUCT

Flux Density ComparrisonPerformance

The most important factor in judging the performance of Magnetic Water Treatment devices is the field strength they develop inside the pipe and it's field alignment. In an open magnetic circuit, surface gauss measurements are always much lower than the gauss rating of the material. Don't confuse material ratings with actual in the pipe flux density measurements. Material rating is only one factor in determining actual magnetic field densities inside the pipe.

These magnets are designed with a heavy steel frame to shape and magnify the flux field inside the pipe. The flux field is such that it crosses directly across the water flow for maximum reaction with the hydrogen atoms in the water.

Safety

  • Magnets are supplied with spacers and/or shipping tape on the magnets to prevent magnet movement due to a sudden jolt. The magnets are not glued in place. They hold themselves in place and the magnets will fly together inside the frame, only if dropped or if the slotted channel is allowed to snap to the bottom of the slot, without a pipe or spacer in place or shipping tape in place.
  • It is very difficult to separate these magnets if they become attached to one another. They must be slid sideways and apart using the supplied spacer.
  • These Neodymium magnets will partially demagnetize each time they exceed 175° F. They will loose all magnetism if allowed to exceed 310° F.
  • The 5-Gauss Line in the fully assembled magnet is 6 Inches from the back of the channels and 1 inch from the side plates. Persons with pacemakers should not handle the magnetic units.
  • Handle magnetic units with care! The magnetic units are extremely strong. Injury is possible if the magnetic units are allowed to snap together or if nearby metal objects are allowed to be attracted to the magnets. Each magnet of the SIZE-21 has a pull force of 195 pounds. Be aware and be prepared, don't allow these things to slip and grab something or somebody.
  • It is highly recommended that you keep the individual magnetic units in their shipped configuration until you actually separate the individual parts for attachment around the pipe. In no case should you attempt to be re-assembled these devices without first placing the devices around the pipe or having the supplied spacer in place.

Installation

Water Service:

Installation requires a minimum of one unit on the incoming water pipe between the water meter and before the first split in the main water service pipe. A booster unit is recommended on the hot water pipe coming out of each hot water heater.

If your pipes are iron or galvanized steel, the magnets will work at a reduced level of flux density! They can be used but the flux density will reduced by a factor of three. To use these devices you may consider replacing that section of the plumbing system with Copper or PVC pipe or add additional units to compensate for the reduced flux field density. Steel is used because of its magnetic properties. This same quality in steel pipe shields the center of the pipe from the flux field.

Outside Units (Homes without basements):

Locate the outside water meter. Remove cover and determine the direction the pipe is running toward the house. Also, note how deep the pipe is. Follow the pipe direction toward the house. Normally, the supply pipe will lead directly to an outside faucet. In addition, if a sprinkler system is present, the main valve box will normally be just to one side of the water supply line.

Dig a hole and locate the water line. The ideal location for the magnetic units is on a straight length of PVC or copper pipe before the line branches off to service the sprinkler system. This configuration will allow the magnetically conditioned water to benefit your lawn and gardens. If a sprinkler system is not present, place the system between the meter (or pump house) and the house. If there are cut off valves at the service entry point of the house, placing the magnet(s) just in front of these is a recommended. Dig the hole large enough to give enough working room and to properly fit the unit around the water pipe. It is recommended that you procure a sprinkler system valve box (10" or larger) and use that to cover the area where the magnets are buried. This will allow you to easily remove the system should you move to another residence.

Installation Procedure (SIZE-1 model): Perform the following only when you are ready to install the unit on the pipe.

  • Remove the unit from the box then remove the floating magnet channel.
  • Set this channel piece down away from tools and the main frame. Set the hardware and the spacer aside. Save the spacer. Also, Leave the red tape in place.
  • Place the main frame around the pipe. Then using the supplied tie wraps and the holes in the lower channel, tie wrap the frame to the pipe (2 places beside each end of the magnet). The purpose here is to center the magnet on the pipe. Leave the tie-wraps just loose enough to allow the magnet frame to be rotated around the pipe. The magnets will squeeze and hold onto the pipes themselves when finished.
  • For this step work gloves are recommended. Next place the slotted channel back into the frame. The best technique is to insert one end of the channel into the main frame and then slide it into place. The skirts of this channel shields the pull of the magnet towards the sides of the main frame, so keeping it centered on the main frame is important. These magnets are extremely strong and will pinch with amazing speed and force. Maintain a firm grip on both parts until the channel is properly seated.
  • Align the channel properly and then install and hand tighten the two carriage bolts, lock washers, flat washers, and wing nuts. Allow the magnets to pull the two channels together as tight as possible around the pipe.

Note: Models SIZE-1/2, SIZE-2, and SIZE-21 come with the hardware installed. The installation procedure is the same, just remove the bolts first.

Alternative basement procedures:

Locate the supply pipe inside the basement before it splits into cold and hot supply. Attach one up to three SIZE-1 units before the split as above. If possible, install the devices at least 12-18" before the line splits and after any filters or holding/pressure tank.

Inside Water Heater Booster Units:

Attach one SIZE-1 to the hot water output pipe of each hot water heater using the techniques described above. Install Multiple Units

Installing Additional Units:

If the water is "very hard" consider adding additional units to the cold water supply. If three magnets are installed, the center magnets should be rotated 180° to reverse the polarity of the flux field that the water passes through. Same polarity mounting will extend the contact time and works just fine if three magnets are not present.

FAQs

Question: Are magnets put on each side of the pipe?
Answer: Yes, each unit's places magnets on both sides of the pipe by design.

Question: Are filters necessary?
Answer: The answer hinges on the water source and water quality. For municipal water, no, a whole house filter is not normally needed. However, a filter for the refrigerator and a Pur Water filter may help to ditch the bottled water habit. Private well water (or any water) with high iron content will benefit from the addition of iron filters.

Question: What is the advantage of using 2 or 3 units for residential, is there any advantage in putting 2 units next to each other on the main incoming water line and 1 on the water heater?
Answer: By stacking additional units on the incoming water line the contact time water has with the magnetic field is extended. The number of units recommended is based on the Total Hardness of your water. If the Total Hardness of the water is 10.5 Grains (180 ppm) or less, one unit on the cold water source may be all that is needed. If it ranges between 10.5 and 15 Grains (180 to 257 ppm) we recommend two or three units on the cold water supply. It's advised to use three units on the cold water supply if the Total Hardness exceeds 15 Grains (257ppm). Three units on the incoming water supply is the maximum number we recommend, beyond this the return is so slim that it is no longer warranted.

Question: Where do the minerals go?
Answer: It's not where do they go, it's where they don't go. The minerals stay in the water. When the commode is flushed, they go down the drain. When you drink water you also get the minerals that your body needs. The body probably does not need to have these minerals replaced with sodium from a salt-based water softener. Few Doctors recommend more salt to your diet.

Question: How close to the water meter is safe for installation?
Answer: Six inches would be more than enough spacing.
