What is Hydrotherapy?

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, "Hydrotherapy is the external or internal use of water in any of its forms (water, ice, steam) for health promotion or treatment of various diseases with various temperatures, pressure, duration, and site. It is one of the naturopathic treatment modality used widely in ancient cultures including India, Egypt, China, etc."[1

What is hydrotherapy used for?

1. To relieve stress

In warm water, the body's blood vessels dilate lowering the resistance on the heart. This reaction actually lowers blood pressure! (The warm water) "may also slow down the body’s reaction to anxiety and release endorphins – a natural stress fighter." [2]

2. Help Relieve Back Pain

The Australian Journal of Physiotherapy printed an article showing that "in a pilot study, which investigated the effectiveness of hydrotherapy in the management of lumbar spondylosis, results demonstrated a reduction in pain levels and suggested that thoraco-lumbar mobility could be improved, especially if the range was less than normal before treatment." 3. Helps Arthritis and Other Pains

According to, "research has shown warm water therapy works wonders for all kinds of musculoskeletal conditions, including fibromyalgia, arthritis and low back pain. There are many reasons soaking in warm water works. It reduces the force of gravity that’s compressing the joint, offers 360-degree support for sore limbs, can decrease swelling and inflammation and increase circulation." [4]
